Blackwater Crotch-Bombers
Can we just be consistent?  If folks want to prosecute domestic terrorists using military courts, and therefore avoiding Miranda restrictions, rogue military contractors like Xe/Blackwater should be handled by military courts, as well.  By taking our money and killing civilians, isn’t Xe/Blackwater doing as much or more to hurt our national security interests as the Taliban?

The word 'Negro' on 2010 census form sparks debate... →
Responding to an emotional outcry, the U.S. Census Bureau on Friday announced it would explore eliminating the term “Negro” from future surveys. Huh.  I wonder what they think about the United Negro College Fund?  A census is also a terrible thing to waste.

Excessive Force, False Reports, Juking Stats
The Merc has a series this year on extreme misconduct in the San José Police Department. They’ve been pushing the issue this fall; maybe they’re gunning for a Pulitzer. This episode, they call out suspect cops by name, since … wait for it … the SJPD •doesn’t•track•those•statistics• http://www.mercurynews.com/breaking-news/ci_14067499

Who Steals More: Workers or Management?
This recent article on employee theft sounds quite dire.  Apparently workers everywhere are robbing their companies blind.  Clearly, if only those pesky employees—now armed with gift card technology!—would stop pilfering, all would be right with the world. Or… would it?  I recall another recent article on wage theft—the practice of management paying workers less than they’re legally...

Why an Estate Tax Makes Sense →
Around the country, Mr. Marshall’s conviction in October pleased district attorneys’ offices and experts in elder abuse, who hoped the case would spotlight an underreported and hard-to-prosecute crime, financial abuse of the elderly. Ms. Gordon agreed that the verdict and sentence “will have powerful repercussions in preventing elder abuse.” This is why I support the estate tax. I’m happy...

Contagious Cancer - Scientists find clue to killer... →
“Fierce as they are, Tasmanian devils can’t beat a contagious cancer that threatens to wipe them out. Now scientists think they’ve found the disease’s origin, a step in the race to save Australia’s snarling marsupial.” I had no idea that cancer could be contagious.  Scary.
